With new safety guidelines to follow, travel looks a little different in this day and age. Here are some useful things to know before you hop on that plane to Ladys Island:

• Know the rules and restrictions in both your origin and destination. You may not be able to travel depending on local circumstances, so check government advisories before booking.
• When you pass through airport checkpoints, do not remove your face mask. You will be asked to lower it briefly to confirm your identity. Passengers who refuse to wear a mask may face civil penalties and may also be denied boarding.
• To decrease the risk of cross-contamination, position your boarding pass on the reader yourself and then hold it up for inspection. Do not hand your boarding pass directly to a TSA officer.
• TSA now allows passengers to take one container of hand sanitizer, up to 12 oz (350 ml) in size, in carry-on baggage. This will have to be removed from your bag to be screened.
• Place any personal items (phone, wallet and keys) in your carry-on rather than a bin to reduce handling during the screening process.
• Transport any food items in a clear plastic bag and also put them in a screening bin. Separating food from your carry-on means it's less likely a TSA officer will need to touch and open your bag for inspection.
